UP government to launch 14 new medical colleges

The Uttar Pradesh government is expected to launch 14 new medical colleges. The Medical Education Department has officially requested permission from the National Medical Commission (NMC), which oversees medical education nationwide, to conduct campus inspections. If approved, this could include about 1,400 more MBBS seats in the state to the existing 8,000 seats.

New medical colleges are scheduled to open in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Kushinagar, Kaushambi, Sultanpur, Amethi, Kanpur Dehat, Lalitpur, Pilibhit, Oraiya, Sonbhadra, Bulandshahr, Gonda, Bijnor, Chandauli and Lakhimpur Kheri.

As of now, the state offers 3,828 MBBS seats in government colleges and 4,700 seats in private colleges. Last year, Uttar Pradesh introduced nine new colleges.

If 14 new medical colleges get approval in the state, a total of 19,376 vacant positions for teachers and staff will be filled. Out of these, 9,954 positions will be filled through direct recruitment. 56 posts will be filled through deputation, while 9,366 posts will be filled through outsourcing. Each medical college will have 112 posts for Assistant Professors, Professors and Physicists. Moreover, there will be 446 positions for Senior Residents, Junior Residents and Medical Officers, and 110 posts each for Chief Pharmacists, Dental Technicians, Pharmacists and non-technical staff.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has unveiled the deadline for submitting forms for NEET-2024. The medical education department aims to secure approval from the NMC before the counselling date for NEET admissions is declared.

A senior official from the medical education department has hinted that the physical verification of infrastructure at the 14 campuses is imminent. The official confirmed that they have already submitted the application and paid the associated fee for this process.

The medical education department has begun appointing faculty members for the colleges. They are currently working on filling up to 50% of the faculty positions, which includes appointing the principal.

There are currently 35 government medical institutions and 30 private medical institutions in the state. After passing its initial inspection, a college is authorised to enrol students and carry out academic activities for three years. News18
